CHANUKAH EXPERIENCES
Chanukah, the eight-day “festival of lights” is celebrated by lighting with traditional Chanukah Menorah, 'Chanukiah', for eight nights, with special prayers, and by eating fried foods such as potato latkes and jelly donuts. Chanukah celebrates two things: 1) A miracle in which one day’s worth of oil burned for eight days 2) The victory of the Jewish freedom fighters over the Syrian-Greek forces that tried to wipe out Judaism in the second century B.C.E. At MakomNY, we always have livey and joy-filled musical Chanukah celebrations. This year we will join for Chanukah at the following festive gatherings: Latke Making December 14th at 4:00-6:00pm Rabbi Bravo's Home RSVP HERE Chanukah-Shabbat Dinner and Celebration December 20th at 6:00pm MakomNY at Bethpage Worship Center, 600 Broadway, Bethpage Details for Dinner RSVP HERE Followed by Shabbat Chanukah Musical Celebration at 7:30pm Chanukah Open House December 22nd, 4pm to 6pm Rabbi Bravo's Home RSVP HERE Special Chanukah Mitzvah Project:
Please join MakomNY in helping others. During the holiday season we are fortunate to have enough food and we are so lucky to be warm this season. Here is an opportunity to provide for those that are less fortunate. Participating in this Mitzvah allows us to make someone’s day a little bit brighter. We are collecting for the following two organizations. We hope you can help us. Maybe even designate one night of Chanukah this year to tzedakah. First, we are supporting the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless seeks to help eliminate homelessness on Long Island and improve the lives of Long Islanders who are homeless. They are looking for new or gently used winter clothes, blankets and many more cozy winter objects. Click HERE to discover exactly what the Coalition needs. (PLEASE only new or very gently used items, where appropriate). Second, we are supporting the INN. The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) addresses the issues of hunger on Long Island. They are looking for canned foods and more necessities. For more specifics of what you can donate find the link HERE. We hope you will donate. We can make a difference. There will be collection bins in the lobby during Moadon and at the Chanukah celebrations at both Bethpage and at Rabbi Bravo’s house during the month of December. (Please do NOT bring bags of random clothes for donation. Only specified items.) |
